Many other bus standards have emerged over the years, promising much but delivering little as they are overtaken by alternative standards for either technical, or more often, commercial and marketing advantage.

These architectures include:-

• Multibus II - Intel's alternative to VMEbus.
  
• STEbus - a 3U bus compatible with VMEbus J2.
  
• Futurebus+ - A scaleable future proof architecture who's features now appear in many newer standards.
  
• AMS & SMP - early Euro card standards.
